I just came aware of the situation when I tried to order the boards. Looks like the new one will be more expensive.

I need two wrap boards now :(

What we've heard from PC Engines is it'll be about the same price.

We had access to one at BSDCan and it runs pfsense just fine. The boot beeps even work on it.  :)

We should be getting some from PC Engines for our test labs when there's a 2 or 3 Ethernet interface version available. Watch the blog for updates, if I get one it'll be fully reviewed there.

It appears the ALIX.1C board is now available in the US.

                This doesn't have two NIC's, but it's a start.

                  To continue this thread….

I currently have a WRAP board running either m0n0wall or pfSense.  I go between both.  In either case, the AMD Geode 233Mhz is not fast enough for my needs.  If I run it as a basic firewall, its fine.  But when I add more services, especially 3DES VPN's, the limitation is noticed easily.  I can only get 1.8Mb through a 3DES/MD5 site-to-site VPN.

There is a thread here talking about a new Liantec board.  http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,5520
This looks like a great option, if not overkill, for my needs.  (Perhaps the VIA C3 option might be more appropriate.)  The other choice is the new ALIX boards from PC Engines.

My question is:  Does anyone know what kind of performance, both raw firewall throughput and VPN, we can expect from the ALIX boards?  I may run the full version of pfSense on a Hitachi microdrive instead of a CF card because it would allow for the installation of Snort and Squid, which take some CPU cycles too.  Right now on the WRAP, I don't even try it.  If the new ALIX board couldn't handle it either, I would save up for a Liantec.  If/when you get your first ALIX board, if you can review it fully loaded and let us know if it's a viable platform to handle all the pfSense services on a typical broadband connection, it may become the best option outside of a PC.  (fingers crossed)

                  Robert

If you can use something other than 3DES, it'll be 2-3 times faster. Or a crypto card like the Hifn cards from Soekris will increase 3DES throughput on a 266 up to over 6 Mb.

The ALIX boards should do 100 Mb wire speed for unencrypted traffic. I haven't heard of anybody testing VPN throughput, and I haven't gotten my hands on a board myself yet. It could max out at 6-10 Mb of 3DES.

                      Even 5Mb would be fine.

I wonder what's taking these things so long to come out.

Do you want a faulty prototype where you have to stand as beta-tester and install every second week a new BIOS to fix bugs?
