I have a large wireless lan (I run a WISP) one of my links is over 28km and feeds a small town.
I want to set up a downstream pfsense box with squid to improve percieved performance.
But I don't want another gateway I need to be able to easily access the client devices, switches etc.
Does Squid need to be set up on a nated box or will it run on a transparent bridge?
      Cheers.

I don't think you can run squid on a bridge, beside pfsense squid package is pretty basic.  I would suggest that you setup standalone squid proxy and configure pfsense gateway to forward all http traffic to it.

Squid worked on bridge as non-transparent-proxy.
          Transparent proxy i not tested.

To Mrsense Yes I thought about that but the gateway is 30 km away  from where I want it.Mapping the traffic from the gateway will limit me to one proxy.
Idealy I would set up several other trans-prox boxes to smooth out demand on the bachaul and improve customer performance.
The idea is to offset traffic from the backhaul. I have used squid before and it is more than up to the job for my needs.
But if it won't work, it won't work.

dvserg I will try it then and see.
            I will post results.
            Thanks for your input.
