24 ports managed GBit switch

I've had nothing but issues with Netgear switches. I have an 8 port managed GBit switch from them. If you use VMware I would stay away. When I transfer files using SMB between the virtual machine and the host, not only is it slow but the system becomes unresponsive. As soon as I unplug it from the Netgear and connect it to my Dell 48 port 10/100 switch with 2 GBit ports it works perfectly. I like the Dell switch, but I would probably go HP over Dell.

I concur with rsw686. I have a 726 as well and that gives me nothing but problems. I remember one time, I disabled spanning tree and the switched froze up. No hard reset will fix it so it had to go back.

I use that HP in one of my racks at the datacenter. Works great.

hmmm. i never had any problems with 726.
but then again… all i did was set up my VLAN's and never touch it again. (since it was running for what i need it)

but when i have problem somewhen i might know where the problem could be ;)

The HP Procurve 2810-24 is a newer series than the 2824. It is smaller in depth and I believe uses less electricity for the green datacenter. We have been using HP Procurves for several years now at work and they do a fine job. Most of the switches have a life time guarantee that works nicely.

We use 3com switches. The 4924 is from a few years back, we've got 2 in separate buildings linked by fiber, acting as our network backbone. Never had a problem, they've been running for 3 years.

As far as I know with the Hp-1800-24 G you dont get VLAN Trunking (more than one VLAN on a given Port). Either the HP 2810 or 2824 will do it. Great Products!

But I was reffering to 802.1Q VLAN Trunking/Tagging. You can only asign one port to one Vlan. And that is why I am not using the 1800-24G.

The cabel i have running between pfSense and the switch is tagget and that is a trunk.

Does anyone have experiences, good or bad, to share about a GBit switch with 24 ports, managed and rack mountable with 1 RU?
I am looking at:

HP 2824

DELL 5224 = SMC8624T = Foundry …

Want to replace an HP 2524 in the office for speed reasons only.
Web management would be sufficient, a console port a plus not a must.
VLAN capable, but which managed switch isn't?

Are there any known issues with the switches mentioned above or recommendations for an alternative?

I realise that the original poster has purchased now. I've got a ZyXEL GS-2024, which seems to be working well for me. There's one small rough edge (when mirroring, the VLAN tagging options are those of the destination port, not the mirrored port, which is counter-intuitive and which I intend to report as a bug), but it still seems to be a good switch for the money. HP Procurve 2810-24 is almost certainly a great switch, but it's nearly twice the price of the ZyXEL for, as far as I can tell, a very similar specification.

I have a Netgear FSM726 that I've retired. Quite apart from it being a 24 port Fast plus 2 port Gigabit switch rather than the 24 port Gigabit switch asked for, it seems to behave badly under load. If I need more fast ports, I'll likely add a ZyXEL ES-2024PWR to the network (I could do with some PoE ports for PoE capable WLAN APs).
