Ram file system
-
Hello.
I am new here and also new with pfsense.
I am wandering if is possible to make a File System mounted in RAM and to have also a redundancy with the hdd.I mean to have something like a Raid 0 architecture between the ram-fs and hdd. The propose is to have more speed.
Thank you in advance. -
There is somewhere a thread which is about this.
(i just cant find it right now…) -
i already lokk for something like this but i nerev find and that's the reason of my post.
-
more speed on what?
-
Exactly what do you expect a ramdisk (mdfs) to help with? The OS will already be using all the free RAM it can to cache disk accesses. Configuring a ramdisk may make matters worse if you don't know what you're doing.

First thank you for the replay.
Second i was thinking to pun 2 GB of RAM on this machine, to allocate 1-1,5 for the system use and 512mb for the fsram.
I want more speed regading the rules execution and maybe the webserver.
Thank you again for you interest to help me. -

Thank you again for you interest to help me.Which rules (firewall, snort, etc), what webserver? I really don't think you're going to get any meaningful performance improvement on your firewall.

firewall rules.
I just ask because i know that is possible.
thanks again. -
A ramdisk wont bring you any performance gain regarding execution-speed of the firewall rules.
The only thing i can think of where it would bring something is to have a ram disk as swap partition for a proxy.
But… if you have enough ram to have a ramdisk its better to use this ram directly for the proxy (so it does not have to swap). -
i have a proxy ! ;D
THX -
firewall rules.

thanks again.Ok, so, you're going to copy the firewall rules from disk to ramdisk, then again from ramdisk to RAM when they're loaded. How exactly do you think this will improve things?
Can I suggest that you apply the KISS principle. There are a few things that ramdisks bring benefits for, however unless you're dealing with those and know what you're doing (which, no offence, it doesn't seem like you do) you should trust the OS creators to know what they're doing ;)

first of all :
1. i know that is possible to make an ramfs and it's fast.
2. i just ask if is possible to make it on pfsense.
3. i just think that will be faster if i pust some files there (ex proxy)
4. i have a test machine with pfsense istalled and i will try to make this.If it's will work ok, if not it's no problem. -
Can I suggest you go re-read this thread. Putting the proxy's cache on ramdisk will NOT improve the proxy's performance. The proxy could better use that RAM for memory caching.
If you really want to go down this pretty pointless route, check the FreeBSD man pages and handbook for documentation on the required commands.

ok. sory for the reading mistake.
