Failed to boot after Full upgade to 1.2 FINAL

CANT INSTALL pfSense 1.2 Final.

Try disabling usb from bios.

Turn off anything extra in the bios such as firewire, usb, etc that is not needed.

Also make sure the BIOS is up to date.

What kind of hardware is this? Kernel panics are FreeBSD issues generally, we don't have the resources to fix these kinds of problems.

Yeah, bios is up to date, all unnecessary features are disabled in bios. Still cant boot from cdrom 1.2 FINAL.

I found the workaround.

boot from cd 1.2 rc2
install 1.2 RC2 with multiprocesor kernel
make full upgrade from console
DONE, you have 1.2 Final working.

My question is.

What is wrong in 1.2 RC3 and newer that i cant boot from CDROM and install?

May just be a prob with the cd … don't burn boot cd at full speed (anyway what's the rush!) :)

That's a strange work around. If your hardware kernel panics with the 1.2 kernel, it should do it whether you're booting from CD, hard drive, or anything else.

Not sure what to tell you, at least you found a way to get it working. After tens of thousands of downloads of 1.2, nobody else has reported seeing this.

Im happy that i found the workaround. So, if i will have free time, i will burn boot CD by minimum speed and try to boot directly to pfSense 1.2 FINAL.

My thought is that this is related to the changes in the uniprocessor kernel in RC3 and higher.
I had troubles with a Pentium-M based board after RC2.

I've had to update these systems to RC2 (even if they were loaded with an RC2 CD. The RC2 update is newer than the LiveCD) before updating to 1.2 Release. After the RC2 update, I get the kernel selection option under firmware update and can select multiprocessor. Going directly from RC2 (LiveCD) or earlier to 1.2 Release results in a dead box. (UP kernel)

Yes, I can confirm the issue, have a look at this thread.

It's definitely a problem with the UP kernel config starting with 1.2-RC3, so installing with 1.2-RC2-livecd, choosing the SMP kernel option, and updating to 1.2-FINAL afterwards was the only way for me to get it going on my Intel D201GLY2 machine.

I have the same problem. I cannot boot the installer on my D201GLY2 based computer. There is a fix ? If no, if I understanda correctly, installing 1.2RC2 and then upgrading to 1.2 does the job ? So, where can I find 1.2RC2 ? I just found beta releases.

I have similar symptoms, but the older release is not solve my problems:

Dual Intel 10/100 NICs
Dual PIII 650
2GB RAM

I am trying to add a 4 port nic from RouterBoard - it uses a pci bridge and 4 VIA Technologies VT6105M (VIA Rhine III chip). In m0nowall and past versions of pfsense, along with linux distros it appears as 4 separate adapters.

When I boot pfsense 1.2RC2-1.2.1Beta with the 4 port nix installed, i get the following screen:

When i remove the card, I do not get the error and as mentioned. I have used this card in other machines with previous versions of pfsense.

I have tried:
with and with out the 4 port card - works with out.
replace the ram
installed without the card, used the smp kernel (dual piii), replaced the card, received the same error.

My ugly hack was to install Debian and then run pfSense into a VMWare virtual machine…

are you doing anything else with the debian host?

anyone… how do i switch to the mp kernel, perhaps i was preforming that work around incorrectly.

Copy kernel.gz from the LiveCD to /boot/kernel/kernel.gz (just pick the correct one).
