1.2 Live CD Boot Error
-
I have a Intel Server Board SE7501WV2 motherboard and am trying to boot the latest production Pfsense, version 1.2. I keep getting the error:
Could not find primary volume descriptor.
After search google, I see that BSD has an issue booting from a CD, but I can't seem to find a solution.
Thank you.

What kind of cdrom are you using (SCSI, IDE, SATA, USB,…)? Does it anything before throwing this message or is that the first message you get?

I was attempting to use a USB DVD/CD ROM. The box I was working with had neither an internal floopy nor optical drive. It is a standard rack mount server.
After much frustration, I gave up on the USB drive and temporary hooked up a standard IDE CD-ROM and the install proceeded without incident.
PFSense certainly does have an issue with the USB DVD/CD ROM that halts the install just after the boot loader is identified. I am able to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.1 on this box with the USB drive, so I know it isn't an issue with the media or hardware. My guess is that this is an upstream BSD issue that PFsense has little or no control over.
Bottom line is I'm up and running, which is a good thing!
Thank you.

USB CD Roms and DVD's are not supported right now. The boot loader has problems with real mode. This will be addressed in 1.2.1/1.3.

Hi there,
I had problems with the Live CD on one box - it restarted just after finding the bootloader.
I got it to run with a GRUB boot floppy as at:
