IDE-CF Adapter recognized as Removable.

I've setup PFSense on quite a few systems and either the motherboard has an embedded IDE port on the board or I could change the settings in the BIOS from AUTO to USER so it did not recognize the IDE-CF adapter as removable.
Until now, of course. We have a Supermicro MB-PDSBML+ board that will not work with the IDE-CF adapter in User Defined mode. The system recognizes the drive as 0 MB and tries to boot off the network. If I set it to AUTO then it'll boot BSD for a bit then lock or freak out. As I understand it, PFSense/BSD will not boot properly off of a removable device.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work? I'd prefer not to put a hard drive in it.

I have used it successfully with IDE-CF-adaptors and with onboard cf-adaptors. Even usbsticks or cfcards in usbreaders will work if the bios supports the correct boot emulation. I would try to play around with bios settings. Btw, wha do you mean with userdefined and auto mode? If there is an option in the bios for chs and lba try both with the media. Also how do you write the cfmedia?

In the BIOS you can choose how to define your media. Either you set it to auto and the BIOS probes it or you manually set it. When it's set to auto it finds it as an IDE Removable. I've run into this before and I usually just manually define it (heads, cylinders, etc.) and it works. No dice this time.
This is the 1st time I've run into any issues with this.
I write the media with a CF reader and physdiskwrite.exe on Windows.

Try to disable all other resources in the bios that you don't need (soundcards, additional com ports,…) to free up some resources. Make sure you run the latest bios versions. If that fails I don't know what else to try besides using another cf-ide adaptor or things like that.
