      After reading this
      http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Microdrive_embedded_installations

and tryin to install full cd edition of PFsense to a magictor microdrive I have some questions because it dont work.

Do I have to use a true ide microdrive or what microdrive is working?

        "Yes"  ;D

        How about some meaningful information?

        Version of pfSense?
        What hardware are you using?
When you say "magictor", what brand did you actually mean?
When you say "it don't work", what error did you get?

Also, have you read the other microdrive threads?

Yes magictor is the brand of the microdrive.
          I use PFsense 1.2

The BIOS found the Microdrive but I could not install anything to it, the installer could format but not installed anything to it.

More details required on the microdrive (size etc) and you still haven't said what system (motherboard etc) you're using.

I've run into a similar problem with a Seagate 5GB microdrive. Its plugged into a CF to IDE adapter plugged into the motherboard. The drive is invisible to m0n0wall (1.3b11) and pfSense (1.2) but Linux 2.6.?? (as used in Smoothwall 3.0) recognises the drive as does g4u which reports it uses NetBSD 3.3. I've had no trouble writing to the drive when its in a USB Compact Flash reader.

I've seen this behaviour reported as a problem against FreeBSD: problem report 110407. FreeBSD 7.0 also doesn't recognise my drive.

Others who reported this problem also report that OpenBSD and NetBSD see this sort of drive. I went though the OpenBSD revision history for the wd driver (IDE disks) and saw a patch that changes to wait time for a response to an IDENTIFY command to 3 secs. In FreeBSD 6.3 the wait time is 1 second. Sometime in the next week or two I hope to try changing it to 3 seconds to see if that helps.

There's news but not good news: I'm still looking into it.

Two of us have lengthened the timeout in FreeBSD and the drive is still unrecognised. I have tried three different systems, one with an Intel 945 chipset, one with the VIA 694 chipset and the third with a VIA CLE-266 chipset and the drive is unrecognised on  all three systems, though in all cases the BIOS reports the drive details.

The drive seems to work ok in a USB Compact Flash "card reader". If your system can boot off USB hard drive maybe you could use the drives in a USB reader.

I'll keep looking into the problem but I don't have a lot of time, so progress may be slow.

It might be worth seeing if that Microdrive is recognised under FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE. There was a substantial refresh of the ata(4) driver fairly late in the 6.3 development cycle, which might help. The upcoming pfSense 1.2.1 will be FreeBSD 6.3 based; FreeBSD 6.2 goes End of Life at the end of May so there will be no more security fixes for it after that date.

Microdrives can be tricky devices; they can either emulate a CompactFlash card or an ATA interface. If the CompactFlash side of things is working better than ATA, a USB adapter might be your best answer if, as wallabybob says, your system can boot from USB.

Meanwhile, I suspect that the FreeBSD PR won't do much good now. It's based around an obsolete release of FreeBSD with substantially different code. It might be worth testing against FreeBSD 6.3, 7.0 or HEAD (8.0-CURRENT), and if there's still a problem, open a new PR. You could mention the PR on the FreeBSD lists and/or email the maintainer of the ata driver (sos@…) to bring his attention to it. Offering hardware that demonstrates the problem might improve your chance of getting a fix.

                      @David_W:

I've done some more research. The ATA_IDENTIFY command doesn't generate a completion interrupt within the timeout period, even when its lengthened. I patched the driver to work around that (effectively treating the timeout as a completion interrupt if the controller wasn't busy) and then when booting in verbose mode the kernel reports the available modes (PIO, WDMA, UDMA etc) - that is the IDENTIFY command provided the information but there was no interrupt. Then the driver hung  in ata_controlcmd().

On reflection, I suspect there is something about the drive such that the controller doesn't interrupt. This might not matter for lots of consumer electronics applications (digital cameras, portable media players etc) but is a serious problem for "real" computers and operating systems. I might have a another play with my drive on linux (which does recognise it) and take a bit more notice of any other chatter about the drive in the startup output.

My drive says its model number is ST650211CF. It doesn't seem to be a current Seagate product.

I tried the drive on Linux 2.6.23.08 from a System rescue CD I had.  Here's an extract from the startup output. This version of Linux isn't very happy with this drive either. I think if I get to use this drive it will be through a USB card reader.
