PfSense console screen - screen info help
-
I am a newbie to both BSD and pfSense. On the console screen, the top 3 lines read like this:
*** Welcome to pfSense 1.2-RELEASE-pfSense on pfSense ***
WAN* -> fxp0 -> 192.168.1.31
LAN -> rl0 -> 192.168.1.32The '*' right next to WAN, what does it mean?
Thanks in advance.

I dont know what the * means but your assignments are definitly invalid.
LAN and WAN have to be in separate subnets to work.

For my setup, pfSense is working as a transparent bridging firewall. As such, they both have local IP in the same subnet. There's another DSL gateway in front of the pfSense box. NAT is done at that DSL gateway, and the WAN side of the gateway has IP assigned from ISP.

If you have a bridge then dont assign the LAN :)

I believe the asterisk you're referring to acts as a link light assuming it's a physical interface.
-
But both the WAN and LAN NICs are physical interfaces (WAN side is the on-board NIC of my laptop, the LAN side is a add-on NIC via PCMCIA slot), how come only WAN has an asterisk?

It's a console version of the link light indicator. If you don't have it then you probably don't have a link light on the interface either. Of course, it could also be an artefact of the bridging.

Maybe 'WAN*' mean what WAN active? I have 'WAN*' and 'LAN*'. ::)

My list shows
OPT5(UBUNTU)* -> em0
LAN* -> em1
WAN* -> vlan0
OPT1(WAN2) -> vlan1
OPT2(VOIP) -> vlan2
OPT3(HTPC) -> vlan3
OPT4(ProCurve) -> vlan4Vlan's is assign to em2

You have 3 physical cards, and 3 '*' in interface ranking.. ? ::)

Thanks for the info, folks.
