hey after just trying out pfsense and finding out a few hrs later that my onboard NIC isn't supported, im looking for a PCI-expressx1 card, and i think this one is because it says here http://www.freebsd.org/releases/6.1R/hardware-i386.html#ETHERNET that "The em(4) driver supports Gigabit Ethernet adapters based on the Intel 82540, 82541ER, 82541PI, 82542, 82543, 82544, 82545, 82546, 82546EB, 82546GB, 82547, 82571, 82572 and 82573 controller chips"

      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106006

      "Intel 82572GI Gigabit Controller"

and according to that list the 82572 is supported right?  if anyone thinks elsewise plz let me know asap, and maybe giv ea suggestion on a different card?

thanks again for the help to who may reply, and i'll be sure to reply back later after i've decided and tested out the card!

I don't know why you referenced the supported hardware list for FreeBSD 6.1. pfSense 1.2 (current supported version) is based on FreeBSD 6.2 and a version based on FreeBSD 6.3 is also available for download, see (e.g.) reply 1 in http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,9819.0

If you haven't already done so, I suggest you try the pfSense based on FreeBSD 6.3 - it may support your on-board NIC. If not, it should certainly support a board based on the Intel 82572 (though I don't have any personal experience with that chip).

ya i alrdy tried upgrading, it's a Realtek 8111C onboard NIC, and it doesn't get recognized and someone told me that if upgrading didn't fix it then there's prolly no solution at hand.

thanks for the reply tho, anyone else have a more definite answer on this card?

I'm really confused why you referred to the Intel driver, for a Realtek chip ;)

However, a quick search of the forum for 8111C would have found you this recent thread, where you'll get the answer (though not the one you're looking for).

ughhh…. noooo... notice on that topic i already replied there... i referred to the realtek driver because my motherboard i have HAS that realtek driver, and i already have an old used NIC  in one PCI slot and a wireless card in another, leaving me with a pci-expressx1 slot, and im asking if that intel NIC will work for sure as far as compatibility goes.

sorry for the confusion, thanks for the reply tho.

                Right.

If you pick any hardware that's on the FreeBSD 6.2 supported hardware list it will work.  Advice is usually to go with Intel, and the Intel Server cards in particular.  Just double check that the card you're looking at has a chipset that's supported - easily done by looking at the spec on the Intel site.

You can't go wrong with Intel cards, they are develloping the drivers themselves so the whole catalog is running. (except some onboard)
