Is this supposed to work for a single name (not fully qualified)?
I'm trying to get a machine called test to resolve but nothing happens.
Host Domain IP Description
test test 1.2.3.4 testI want to be able to ping test and have it respond at 1.2.3.4
It should also respond to http://testthanks
btw: /etc/hosts shows
1.2.3.4 test test.testbut I can only ping test.test….. not simply test
update:
It took a few minutes, but my other machines are now able to ping "test"Is there something I need to restart to make this happen quicker or do I just need to let it runs its course?

Search the forum.
I posted somewhere screenshots of exactly this.To access test instead of test.test you have to leve the field host empty.
ie:
Host Domain IP Description
test 1.2.3.4 test
