Need help with hardware configuration
-
hey guys,
i'm looking forward to add a pfsense box to my network.
my setup should look like this:
WAN -> pfsense (fast ethernet)
pfsense -> DMZ (gigabit ethernet)
pfsense -> LAN (gigabit ethernet)
so i'm looking for a low-cost box with 3 nics, 2giga and 1 fast ethernet. 3giga would be okay too.
I want to install pfsense on a cf card so i'd need a cf reader too.
Another important thing is energy: ~40-80 watt max.
I'd greatly appreciate your help in finding hardware that would fit my needs, I've been looking for 3 days now but didnt come up with any proper results.
I also checked the websites recommended on the m0n0wall and pfsense pages without a result.
I don't want to buy a ready built system.. would prefer individual parts.
thanks for your suggestions and help

You could buy a box from Soekris, PC Engines, or similar companies. It is not necessary to have three NICs installed. You can do it with two and split the LAN NIC with VLANS.
Myself, I use the cheapest possible board from Gigabyte, an AMD Athlon processor, a small HD, etc. It is important to remove the graphic card, as this needs a lot of current.

I think there arent any soekris or pc engines boards that feature gbit nics.
that's why I can't use them.
any other suggestions or configurations?
anything will do as long as there are at least 2 gibt nics and another one (at least fast ethernet).

Which country do you live in? maybe someone has a more local reseller on hand that can be helpful.
Maybe too new but I foresee a great future for it running pfSense.
Maybe not fast enough.
Use a low power CPU, find a motherboard using intel giga nic with free pci-e slots or use a vlan switch with the one giga nic.
Reading though this site might also lead to a product. -
hey thanks for the links so far, I will check them now.
I live in germany near switzerland and france tho.
any other suggestions? I read about a jetway setup with 3 gigabit nics, but it was mentioned that the config isnt very stable…

Save yourself some grief, read this thread: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,11913.0.html

thanks for your link cheesyboofs,
but I think I'll prefer real nics compared to vlans, I already have a 5 port gigabit switch for my dmz devices and 8 port gigabit switch for my LAN devices and i want to connect them to the pfsense box.
all needed cables are already set up.
I'm just looking for a box that fits my needs and doesnt need too much energy.
this would be ok: http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11714
but looks kinda expensive especially wen shipped to europe

I have the previous generation (FX5620) and it's a brilliant little box, even if it isn't cheap.

thank you very much so far.
are there any other hardware suggestions with individual components? maybe a barebone configuration or minipc?
