Intel DG41RQ - G41 Motherboard SATA / PATA -install not allowed?
-
i Searched the supported list, but couldnt locate anything about the intel G41 chipset, i just recent tossed together a new box for PFsense and would prefer to use the SATA connection on it, but upon booting from the live cd-installer, i get not option to install to the harddrive, even though th drive does show in the bios, so i assume the sata controller in the g41 chipset is not yet supported?
-
interesting, i just put in a PATA harddrive and only got the option to boot as well with no install… i downloaded this :
pfSense-1.2.3-RC1-LiveCD-Installer.iso
does it not have an installer on it?

Speculation:
If the OS doesn't recognise your hard drive controller it won't see any hard drives so there may be no point in starting the installer because there is no hard drive to install to.Suggestion:
Many chipsets introduced in the last few years have the capability of the IDE controllers operating in a variety of modes. It may be worth changing the relevant BIOS setting. For example, on the ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI motherboard has a BIOS sub-menu SATA configuration with an item OnChip SATA Type which seems to have to be set to SATA rather than RAID or AHCI for FreeBSD to boot. -
I checked the bios in the system and it has ATA/IDE Mode that is the only option for harddrive configuration and it only has legacy and Native, neither settings work, with either a PATA and SATA drive installed :(
Would hate to have to order a different motherboard, i cant use one of the 2 PCI slots of the PCIe slot for a drive card, since i am using all the slots for NIC's….

Its quite a while since I have done a fresh install of pfSense.
http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,7356.0.html has screen shots of an installation. When you boot from CD do you get that first screen? If not, what do you see?
I can't find anything like pfSense-1.2.3-RC1-LiveCD-Installer.iso in the snapshots build area http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD7/RELENG_1_2/?C=M;O=D Did you try an iso from the the snapshot builds area?
-
I downloaded http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD7/RELENG_1_2/pfSense-1.2.3-20090512-0744.iso.gz unzipped and burned to CD. Then I booted that CD (note you have to select a FreeBSD boot option or wait a few seconds for it to proceed automatically) and after asking a couple of configuration questions I got the long menu displayed (similar to the one I referred to earlier) and that included option 99 to install to hard drive.
If you get to that point but there is no option 99 displayed I suggest you select option 8 (to get to the shell prompt) then type the command
dmesg > d.txt
which will write the startup output to a file d.txt/ Then type control-D to exit the shell, then use options 1 and 2 to configure interfaces and LAN address so you can ftp d.txt to another machine and from there post it as a reply to this topic so we have a bit more information to work with.
Another option: if you plug in a USB flash drive before booting from the CD its possible it will be detected as a hard drive and you may be able to install there. Its probably not a good long term solution but should at least allow you to get up and running while the problem with the rotating hard drives is investigated.

the only screen i get from the CD is has the options off
1. Boot PFsense [Default]
2. boot pfsense with ACHI disabled
3. boot pfsense in safe mode
….and so on, i can only seem to boot from the live cd, not install.
will try to download the and burn from above, i downloaded the rc1 iso from the rc1 link on the main page originally.
fingers crossed! -
The install option does not appear at that point.
When that screen comes up hit the enter key to boot pfSense OR wait a few seconds (about 10, I think) to accept the default option. Then you will see a lot of FreeBSD startup output and be asked some configuration questions (which interface is LAN?, which is WAN? etc) then you will be offered a menu on which item 99 is to install to hard drive.
It looks as if your first problem (there may be others along the way) is wrong expectation: the install option is not offered at the first menu after boot. The installer is a pfSense application hence you have to boot pfSense before you can install. That first menu you see gives some options for booting pfSense.

i thought the install was on that first menu..lol, this is what happens when i get too many projects going at once, i lose my mind!
trying it out now again.

it worked, wow, i feel so bad now for wasting your time, the help was appreciated.
