      Hi guys,

I've been searching high and low trying to figure out why my Linksys WUSB54g V4 USB wifi dongle wasn't working when I had the 1.2.2-Embedded image installed on a Wyse Via C3 1Ghz machine. To try and resolve this, I went out and bought an Asus WL-167G ver.2 USB wifi dongle, with the same result - not detected with the Embedded image on a 512MB ATA flash device.

Later on, I looked at the /boot/loader.conf of ALPHA 2.0 and I couldn't see any trace of 'if_ural_load="YES"'. Being limited with freeBSD in general, I don't know if adding this in there would help or not, nor do I know how to add such a line in the loader.conf since it's an embedded read-only file.

My next take to get the USB wifi dongles working is to run the Live CD, the result - detected both devices as ural0 and rum0. Now, I could follow the "Full install on CF" guides that is around by installing it on the CF card and then changing it over to 'embedded' to limit writes. However, my question is, is there a way to add support for these devices on the embedded image file? I read that the kernel contains the ural and rum drivers.

      Thanks for your support.

You would add such a line ONLY if you have the driver binary file built to match the kernel. pfSense normally builds the driver into the kernel.

My GUESS is that the build of the embedded kernel didn't specify the inclusion of either ural or rum drivers whereas the build of the live CD kernel did.

          thanks wallabybob for the response.

I've decided to do a full-install on my flash device, and change the setting "pfSense" to "embedded" and it has detected the USB wifi dongles fine.

Now onto stability testing on the VIA chipset.

          Cheers

you mean when it asks you which kernal to install??

im currently having the same issue and don't want to install a hard drive.  its nice and quite without one.  i assume you turn off the swap and disable logging as well to minimize the writes?
