      I had this same question when I got my dual GB card a while ago.  I can speak for that card and say that it's a 64bit card, but it does work on 32bit pci slots.  It just overhangs on the end of the pci slot and works in 32bit mode.  On the particular board that I had, it would only work on 1 of the 2 pci slots as the overhang hit some motherboard component.    I did a search for your card and depending on what exact model you had, it's probably the same (most are 32 bit only, or 64/32).
        That's my bit of info..

        Noob question.

        I bought intel pro/100s dual port server adapter and tried to install in a conventional desktop/pfsense setup. The card overhangs from the pci slot. Pfsense can see the two ports I can setup lan on one and wan on the other. It shows a lan ip address the wan pulls a dhcp address, but that's it no local dhcp no internet access. I can switch back to my regular setup using the single ethernet cards with no problem.

        I looked up server mother boards and most of them have the same conventional pci slots as my desktop/pfsense. The only ones that look different are the 64bit pci slots. I don't think the intel pro/100 s ethernet server card is 64bit. I am struggling a little with the difference in cards since server mother boards primarily look like mine.

        Please straighten a noob out it would be much appreciated.

        If your single ethernet cards support MDIX (or are gigabit adapters), you might want to switch the cable to a cross type vice-versa.  AFAIK, the Intel 10/100 adapters don't have MDIX capabilities.  Made that mistake once when I was under the impression that the Cisco CPE would at least have MDIX.

          You could start by reading here and see if your card is supported on the conventional PCI bus interface….

          On the other hand, it would be very nice to know your hardware setup, incl. motherboard type, server NIC model nr asf...:)

                    Do I need to run a crossover cable to my switch and cable modem or should the card have mdix or auto negotiate the settings?

                      Try with a normal patch and let it autonegotiate…..

                        again tyvm for all your help.

                        I had time to play with it tonight and found out that it will only auto negotiate when both ports are being used. If I only used fxp0 then I needed to use a crossover cable, but if I used fxp0 and fxp1 then I can use a regular patch cable with no problems.
