Trouble getting Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapters to show up as 1gb
-
Hi I just upgraded my pfSense box and put in 2 PCI Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapters.
For some reason I can't get them to auto-detect my 1gb lan, my other gigabit nics (2 of them) work just fine at gigabit speeds. I can't manually set the speeds on the cards either (They lose all connectivity). Both cards only detect a 100mb/s connection.
Anybody else had this problem? Comments, Suggestions?
Thanks,
Robert -
Have you tried with other cables???
-
Yep - tried with other cables, other switches and to the same switches the other working gb nics are plugged into.

I'm running two Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapters on my pfSense box and they were immediately recognized as gigabit interfaces. I suggest you re-assign both the LAN and WAN interfaces manually and see if anything changes; I don't think you can simply swap them out. Other than that, are you sure they're set up on the LAN and not WAN side of things?

Hmm, the two interfaces on the cards are opt1 and opt2, they aren't connected to the LAN or WAN. I just had them plugged into gigabit switches to make a DMZ and WIFI networks.
I'll try swapping the cables around some more and reconfiguring and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions.

So it turns out BOTH cables I was using were wired wrong… (these were purchased cables) The nics now show up as 1 gigabit full duplex but for some reason I can't get speeds > 99mb/s through the router. I am positive that everything is now gigabit from server -> switch -> router -> switch -> desktop (on other subnet). Has anyone seen this before where everything shows up as gigabit but the throughput is still only 100mb/s?
Thanks,

What kind of hardware are you using and what kind of trafffic are the 100mb/s for??
-
I'm using an asus p5q-e motherboard with gigabit nic to a gigabit dlink switch to the gigabit pci-e intel EXPI9301CTBLK on the pfsense box then the data is coming out of the lan nic on the router (also a gigabit nic) Intel PWLA8391GTL to a linksys gigabit switch over to my gigabit nic on my desktop. I used to get gigabit speeds when everything was on the same lan and not running through the router.
The 100mb/s was achieved by copying a 10GB file from my server to my desktop.

Did you measure time instead og looking at the traffic graph??
-
I looked at the BW graph as well as the transfer speed according to Windows (12.5MB/s ish) which confirms the 100mb/s. I will time a file later but I suspect it will also confirm the 100mb/s.
