Any performance hit when running in VM? (ESXi or Hyper-V)
-
I have a somewhat decent home virtualization server running Hyper-V and I'd like to start using pfSense but it seems silly to dedicate another machine when my VM server has lots of extra power it's not using.
What kind of performance hit will there be to running it in a VM? Is this even recommended?
I'm mostly concerned about latency, etc.

There's a virtualisation forum with many posts in it that you should read.
Key points:
-
Virtualisation will always add a performance overhead - however you shouldn't notice it unless you'd be running the physical hardware at near 100%.
-
Virtualisation introduces security risks since as well as vulnerabilities in the (now virtualised) host you now have vulnerabilities in the virtualisation platform.
