For me, I hope there will also be 8GB NanoBSD snapshots soon.  It is hard to justify buying 4GB CF cards or even 2GB when the 8GB is cheaper, about $15US this week.  I also heard it is now slightly more expensive to make a 2GB CF card than an 8GB.

Why not just buy the card and put the 2GB image on?  For nanobsd, bigger is the opposite of better!

The 4GB snaps should appear again: http://redmine.pfsense.org/repositories/revision/3/da7dd453100643a5a93170cd16c2577103c27547

Won't having a bigger image means much more space for future addons/packages?

Yes. But packages are the domain of spinning disk and the beauty of nanobsd is its compactness. I appreciate that people want to use ALL the space on the card, but the developers need to prioritize resources. How long before people ask for 16GB card images?  Right now a 2GB upgrade slice copy (1GB itself) takes ~220 seconds to copy on my ALIX 2D3 when the upgrade is applied.  I'm in the camp that packages should remain unsupported on the embedded flavor of pfSense.

One of the package I'm thinking of adding is the FeeSWITCH package.  Even the author thinks at least 4GB is best.  For a simple home setup, not needing a power hungry small PC, the Alix+CF would be ideal.  I just saw a few new low power Intel Atom-based embedded network appliances w/ GigE ports pci-e & CF slots from Taiwan & China.  They look like excellent Alix replacements.

Yeah, not sure why the Alix writes SO SLOWLY on CF cards. Maybe it's the CPU/Bus/driver issues.  The same high speed CF cards when placed into a regular PC w/ an adapter writes much quickly.

Also, I just bought a new HP desktop, and it writes the image in a matter of seconds to my year old "high speed" 4GB CF card.

Since we're getting a bit off topics, what the heck ::):

I'm sure some of these will show up, re-branded by others with a price premium slapped on top of them, but one of the newer ones is this one: http://www.ibase.com.tw/2009/fwa6104.html

Not exactly sure who "really" makes them.  Oftentimes they are the exact same board sold by several dealers at very different prices.  Another one is: http://www.made-in-china.com/showroom/norco-rachel/offer-detailJqaQLpoKOucb/1-Fanless-Network-Appliance-Based-on-Atom-N270-CPU-with-4x-LAN.html

Right now, they are mostly sold to resellers and are purchased in large quantities. Runs about 1.6GHz & is fansless & can add a mini-pci VGA card if not planning on wireless.

The cpu uses about 2.5 watts & chipset is about 6 watts, so it's not as bad as those 1st gen. Atoms, where the chipset needed a fan.

I'm gonna wait till the end of the year when the're a bit cheaper  :-)  Just ignore the price they show, as it is ALWAYS very negotiable, once you discuss volume.

I can't find the snapshot for the 4GB, when will be available?

Edit: Thanks for the new build. Found it now with date Aug 19, 2009 http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_7_2/pfSense_RELENG_1_2/nanobsd/

                        just wondering..
                        1. is there any reason there are daily version of the different images?  bug fixes/enhancemmentS?
                        2. i've tried to do the auto upgrade and after that, it blew up.. i had to reburn the image on my test 1GB CF card.
                        3. so, i have decided to get a 4GB.. instead of 2GB.. only $2 differences… now it won't even find the card when i use the physdiskwrite.. anyone has any clue?
                        4. i am also trying to use it on the alix 2c3 board.. anyone has any 'friendly' advise as far as.. what 'not' to do?

                        thank you

                          Hi

                          • The builds are automated.  There's no guarantee that today's build will have different code than yesterday's.  But newer code is generally better.  YMMV.

                          • Auto upgrade is still broken for nanobsd as far as I know.  Manual update works, assuming you're running a manually flashed nanobsd instance

                          • Can you copy and paste the contents of the DOS window that gave the error(s)?

                          • Do you know what version of the ALIX BIOS you're running?

                            1. thank you for the clarification.
                            2. does that mean i should do a daily manual download and apply it to the '1st' slice?
3.–i will try to capture it next time
                            4. 0.99h.  maybe i am not clear aout my question.. i am just wondering if there's anything i should watch out for? like.. performance will degrade after certain amount of time...blah blah.

                            thank you :D

2: No.  Assuming you already have a recent nanobsd instance (that you presumably flashed by hand), you can download an update suitable for the size of your CF card and use System:Firmware:Manual Update.  I just looked and I guess I hadn't noticed that Auto Update has been removed from the later snapshots.
4: The later snapshots seem quite stable.  I have not had issues for quite some time on my 2D3.

                                Great! thanks!

now, just wondering is there a special forum for the nanobsd package setup?  i have installed the imspector and denyhost and they both don't seem to be working.(no log for imspector and nothing with denyhost)…

                                thanks
