Physdiskwrite alternative?

I had exactly the same problem with physdiskwrite.
I originally had the CF in a USB card reader and I couldn't get it to work until I attached the CF directly to the IDE connector on my motherboard. Then it worked perfectly. -
my vista notebook refused to write past a number of bytes (same issue as OP)
I did all the "raised elevation" stuff too.
Would not cooperate.I used 2nd other notebook that has XP on it, and it worked fine.

It might be worth trying to download Virtualbox, make an XP VM, and make a USB filter so that the VM will see the reader. Then you can try to write the image from within the VM, to see if it works.
My Vista laptop and desktop at work both have used physdiskwrite fine with no problems, but both with the same card reader (a cheapie $13 one from Wal-Mart, believe it or not)

Just tried another machine with which has an Epson printer with a CF reader. Failed here too.
There got to be a better software for this. If you Google this error you will find large number of posts of the same exact error and no solution.

Just tried DD for windows. Copied two images 1g and 2g to two cards. I will find out if it actually works when I get home. Will post later,
Command I used,
dd if=ImageName.img of=\.\G: bs=1440k
G: is the drive letter for my CF reader.

Sorry I can't report if DD worked since I need to use two of the cards I had with me to reflash the bios on my alix board.
What I can report is that physdiskwrite worked fine using the same writer and Cf cards once they where not formated under windows or freedos.

I've had this issue before on Vista and now on Win7 due to both Operating Systems shutting down the media disk during the write operation. I'm not sure if this is part of the hard drive power management options or an issue with physdiskwrite not letting the OS know it's in the middle of a write operation, but I've had to do all my disk writing on XP machines.
If anything, you can try a Live PE environment to get it working if you do not have an XP machine available.

Good catch, I can replicate that as well. I've seen many people with that issue but I've never had a problem, that explains why though, none of my many CF cards have Windows-readable partitions on them.
I reported it to Manuel, the author of physdiskwrite, hopefully he'll be able to fix it with that info. Aside from that one issue, it's a great little piece of software. I've written CF cards many thousands of times with physdiskwrite and never had a problem with it until I just put a FAT32 partition on the CF. Deleting the FAT32 partition made it work fine again.
