ASDL, PPOE, i am really lost getting this pfsense box online
-
hello i need help trying to get this pfsense box online with my ASDL connection:
first i am using the latest RC3 and here is the pdf manual to my modem:
http://www.tp-link.com/english/soft/200862153117.pdfI am very new to PPPoe and ASDL so correct anything i have wrong, my first attempt was to put the router in bridge mode and turn off dhcp, then i plugged my credentials into pfsesen and set my wan connection to PPPoe, put my username and password in and waited.. first of all i dont see any information in the log files regarding the PPPoe, but anyways
i will go to the status -> interface -> wan and everything is correct, gateway, dns servers EXCEPT the ip address, it is giving me a 172.25.121.* ip which i am guessing is the ISP internal system… any ideas?>

[Topic moved from the PPPoE server board because this is PPPoE client, not server function]
MPD is used for PPPoE and its log entries usually go into the system log.
Most ADSL CPEs (modems, or modem/routers) will pass through PPPoE even if they are in router mode, as long as they are not programmed with a username and password. The ones I have encountered will anyhow. (And I have encountered a lot, I work for an ISP and we provide service with PPPoE)
The first thing I would suggest you do is a factory reset on your DSL CPE, and then set pfSense for PPPoE and give it your username and password.
Not sure where that private IP address is coming from, but if it is coming from your ISP, that is something you may need to talk to them about. the MPD log entries may help there, but ultimately if that IP is coming from the ISP, they can tell you why.

alright i am going to try that right now, sorry to sound ignorant but what and where are the MPD logs?

ok i see, i dont remember seeing anything with mpd in front of it on the system tab in the web gui, but allow me to confirm
-
It's possible the entries are still in the log but have scrolled off the portion you see in the WebGUI.
Go to Diagnostics > Command, and try this in the Shell command box:
clog /var/log/system.log | grep "mpd:" -
Ok well im posting these logs on behalf of fairchild…
$ clog /var/log/system.log | grep "mpd:"

That address (172.25.121.65) is being passed to you from your ISP, then. You may need to ask them if there is some other router setting such as PPPoE service name that needs set, or for more specific guidance on why you aren't getting a public IP.

where would that setting go in pfsense? we are calling them now to see if something else needs to be set
-
On the WAN config page there is a field for that in the PPPoE section.
