Multi-wan interface names not showing up in the pool– until detected?
-
Hi,
Was trying to setup a PFSense 1.2.3 latest RC today and was having trouble going through the 1.2 multi wan guide, http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Multi-WAN_Version_1.2.x. I got up to the part about setting up the load balancing pools and couldn't find the interface names in the pool. I tried with multiple browsers and it was the same result.
Long story short, I didn't have any wan / modem devices connected. Sure enough when I hooked up those ports physically to my network I was able to proceed with the configuration. I was actually trying to set this up in advance of an install and not in production, so that set me back a bit. I don't know if that is by design but it would have been helpful to get everything setup as far as I could in advance.
Apologies if I missed it in the docs…. sharing in case others missed it too.

Similar to above, trying to follow the guide for "Setting up rules to access specific ISPs" I go into the firewall config and create the rule as per the guide, http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Multi-WAN_Version_1.2.x
However, when it gets to the gateway section I can only select gateways from the drop down list, of which none are the right option and I can't manually type in a gateway address… My choices are:
Default
10.1.10.1
LoadBalancer
Wan1FailstoWan2
Wan2FailstoWan1I've got it working now using a failover rule "WanXFailstoWanY". The guide makes it seem as though you can specify just the one gateway and if there is a failover it'll just block the traffic, from an end user perspective it probably doesn't matter but I wasn't sure if I was missing something in the gateway options or if I should setup additional connections in the loadbalancer setup (where it appears to be getting the last 3 entries above).
I've done some searching and didn't see this discussed so appreciate any input or clarifying links.
Lastly, has anyone purchased the PFSense book, is it mainly a hardcopy of the WIKI guides online or does it expand upon items like this?

The wiki guides aren't all that great, they were written by outside contributors. The multi-WAN coverage in the book is extensive, and written by the person who has done more of those setups than anyone (i.e. me ;D), it's far and away better than anything freely available.

The individual gateways as you have them configured are there, 10.1.10.1 would be your OPT WAN, and default is your WAN. If you pick one of those it will behave as you describe. If that gateway isn't right, your interface isn't configured right.
