Configuration/Password Recovery

I have read every article about password recovery on embedded installs, but I am not finding answers to a couple of questions.
Is it possible to take the cf card out, and mount it on another machine, and find the config file?
or
Is it possible to interrupt the boot process by hitting F1, and navigate the filesystem from the boot: prompt?
I am trying to retrieve a config from the router without making any changes to the original. I don't have the passwords for the webGUI or the console.

You can get the config off the CF just fine with another BSD box.
