I'm not sure how this would work with pfSense.
For one they talk about an API to access the backplane directly.
I doubt that there are any drivers for FreeBSD.Also to process 10Gbit/s you need a very fast CPU/multicore system.
The picture there just doesn't look like such a system ;)(but i'd like to get my hands on such a thing just to play around :D )

I don't think the "open" ProCurve ONE zl service module will be based on the current one listed @HP. HP has asked it's "Partners" AKA the ones who sell software to run on these modules if its OK to release an open module that would allow us to pick what we wish to run. And I dont expect to be routing at full 10gig of traffic.
the api is just snmp commands for setting vlans, locking ports, qos, getting packet stats. The same stuff HP PCM (huge FAIL) software does.
But yes current specs are a little on the low side

My company likes the lifetime warrentys HP ProCurve provides, 4 current locations I can put this into play now. I just recycle desktops for pfsense use. No joke I got two old desktops @ the colo doing each 30+ MB with pfsense for YEARS. Ipsec, openvpn, vlans all are happy and stable on 1.2.3. Even when I do contracting I put in HP gear at the colo's. Dealing with HP is great and I love I can get support on the line in under 5mins EVERY TIME. And ugh cisco service contracts #$#$# NO MORE.

if thats what Im thinking it is I have a procurve (managed?) switch 10/100 that I got for $10 and wouldn't mind dumping PF on that if possible ;)

No this would not run on older managed switchs, the ProCurve module is an x86 computer that goes in a slot in procurve zl switchs. Some of the Procurve line does have nice programmable asic's but zero chance to run on those.

I'm pretty sure we've has FreeBSD ported. And yes - to fully process 2x line-rate 10Gb/s feeds (the blade has 2 ports) would need a faster CPU - however it does depend on what you want to do with the bits. We've seen a firewall application running at something like 3-5 Gbps; which is more than enough for most applications.

whats the best way to determine which type of procurve switch I have? im not really able to find a model number…unless thats gonna be on the bottom in ungodly small print...

Only Modular ProCurve zl switchs. Such as 8200zl or 5400zl series, http://www.procurve.com/products/switches/index.aspx
A naked 5406zl is about $1200USD on ebay, and the zl services module is just crazy $$$$. But you can get them cheap if you watch ebay.

ok I know the one I got most likely won't work (plus i picked it up used anyways) do I guess its time to tear into it and explore it…hehe...see what it has...
