Can someone double check sizing electrical requirements for my datacenter needs
-
I have a client that we will be setting up in a local datacenter (peak10.com)
There will be 7 servers, all with redundant power supplys
2 X Dell R710
1 X Dell T710
4 X Dell R610And some switched and firewalls.
I met with the salesman at the datacenter and based on this info he quoted me the following for power:
RAL-CLPW-20A120 20A/120V AC circuit 1 EA
- 20A 120VAC UPS conditioned power with diesel generator backup.
- Maximum utilization is 80% of rated capacity (16Amps)
- (1 Breaker Slot)
SPECIAL NOTES:
Primary 20A / 120 Volt AC Circuit that must be associated with a like redundant circuit.
-20AMP 120 VAC UPS conditioned power with multiple diesel generators backup
-Maximum utilization is 40% of rated capacity (8 AMPS)
-Includes Protected Environmental Controls, Temperature and Humidity
-Cost for each addtional AMP above the 12 AMPS will be at a rate of $40.00 per AMP
RAL-CLPW-20A120R Redundant 20A / 120 Volt AC Circuit 1 EA $400.00 $160.00 $400.00 $160.00
- Must be associated with a like primary power circuit.
- 20A 120VAC UPS conditioned power with diesel generator backup.
- Maximum utilization is 80% of rated capacity (16Amps)
- (1 Breaker Slot)
SPECIAL NOTES:

From what I gather from this is that I will have a total of 16AMPS usable (staying within the 80%). Does that sound like enough for those servers? I know a little about electricity but not that much but isnt 120V*1AMP = 120Watts? If thats the case then 18AMPS would equal 1,800Watts. One of those power supplies in one of the server is 1100Watts, am i missing something?
Thanks

I don't see anything pfSense related there so you're horribly off topic ;)
That said, PSU rating is the maximum. I've got a number of (older) Dell servers with a maximum draw of 6A that never draw 1A because of their loading.

Thanks, that makes sense :)

The average power consumption is around 330watts for dual socket quadcore xeon with 6 SAS drives….When the load is high, it peaks at around 350watts. 16 amps times 120V = 1920/350 = approx. 5 servers.... Its a little on the smaller side. You need more headroom, so powerspikes doesnt kill the safetyswitch.
If it has redundant power to the servers, make sure they are connected to two different circuits....:)

its definetly 2 different circuits, I dont think i will trip anything, its just that I am in contract for 2 20AMP redundant circuits, if I go over I just have to pay more. The generators at this place are the size of my house, this place is nuts

Allright. I dont think you will trip them either….Just make sure that you dont restart all of them at once....:D

yea good call, i gotta check to see how the power will be billed
