I love my embedded PFsense install
-
It works so flawlessly after I set it up that it is easy to forget it is there.
Running cable modem on wan1 and dsl on wan2. Load balancing is sharing better than I thought it would and failover works flawlessly too.
I had to setup my Westell 6100 in DMZ mode to opt1 to get the full transfer rate I was expecting.
Using PPoE was not ideal because I needed sticky connections for my banking site and I wanted to avoid double NATing any of the wans.I purchased the PFsense book and highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about setting up a proper PFsense install.
There is one thing I would love to be able to do though… transparent proxy...
It would be great if I could use my NAS as the disk by editing fstab to mount the NAS drive at boot time and have squid running on the PFsense box sending the cached data to the NAS.
Problem is the package is not part of the package list :(Or even put the USB ports to use and cache to a thumb drive.
Having the embedded device is sweet but does take some loss in functionality.
Guess I want my cake and eat it too.
Is there really a practical way to do a transparent proxy with an embedded install that I am not thinking of?
I do realize this functionality is part of the full install but that would defeat the low heat/wall mount ability of the embedded install.
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

All good things to hear. ;D
As for the transparent proxy, someone would just need to add some kind of file system management package to let you mount external drives. You can already specify the cache directory for squid. Though you must also keep in mind that the act of being a caching server does require a bit of CPU, so the embedded unit may not be up to the task of this role in that way as well.
A feature like that (file system management) might be a good candidate for a bounty.
