Should I use PFSense instead of my tomato router?
-
Today someone told me I would get better security by using PFsense than the tomato firmware installed on my netgear router.
Since I would be running PFsense on a small computer instead of a dedicated hardware router which would consume less power AFAIK, I decided to investigate the pros and cons
Will PFSense really protect me more out of the box, with the default configuration? How so?
Thanks for any input ???

IMO no - out of the box both offer pretty much exactly the same level of protection.

If all you need is firewall "protection" then just about anything will do.
But when you want to do more advanced features, that is where a more fully-featured system like pfSense comes in handy.

so if someone is trying to break into my network, (I keep all my incoming ports closed at the moment) PFsense wouldnt be any harder to break into?

If you keep all incoming ports closed, nothing can get in that way regardless.
If something (virus, etc) gets in, it's because a PC on your LAN downloaded it or let it in, which is a completely different problem.
