Why must DHCP server ?
-
i just want binding ip–MAC address , why must Enable DHCP server on LAN interface
many router software can do it not need DHCP
-
binding ip to specific mac is done by dhcp server. those routers also have a dhcp service running.
-
i can`t understand,in DOS "arp -s 10.0.0.2 00-aa-00-aa-00-aa " is ok,why must use DHCP service ? ???
-
Think about it for a second…...
When an authorized Mac address accesses the LAN what service is going to allocate an IP to it other than DHCP????

Because those routers are using a DHCP server service but in a whitelist only mode when configured as such.
Basically, the DHCP server service will not allocate any IPs to clients requesting for an address except when the MAC address matches to one that is on the list.
Make no mistake, the routers still have a DHCP server service running in the background.

He is talking about static ARP and a DHCP server is not required to use static ARP. PfSense just lacks a separate GUI for loading the allowed MAC->IP pairs with arp(8 ) and uses the DHCP server static mappings for the same purpose if you turn on the static ARP option in the DHCP server options.

I understand the DHCP now, :) ,i try it on my virtualbox.
if you open " Enable DHCP server on LAN interface " every client can get ip address from pfsense .and every client can access LAN ip.
if you open " Deny unknown clients " just the client in the " DHCP lease table " can get ip address from pfsense.if you are a geust of the LAN , pfsense don`t do anything for you .
if you open " Enable Static ARP entries " the client can not change ip manual ,if changed client will can not access LAN ip and WAN.
i know why binding IP–MAC must need DHCP service now , focus in " Deny unknown clients " . pfsense think the guest pc should not be get ip from pfsense , but whois guest ? Except the " DHCP lease table " !
thanks every one answer my topic !! and thanks pfsense open source firewall team .
