    In basic pfense, are you able to control what computers can access what sites?

        If by "basic version" of pfSense you mean "pfSense without packages" the answer is No. In that configuration it is possible to use firewall rules to control access to individual IP addresses but a single IP address can host many web sites.

        I believe it is possible to use packages such as snort or squid with squidguard to control access to individual web sites but I have no experience of this.

          You have to install Squid (and ideally SquidGuard) to do that.  I use that setup and it works well.
