Hardware requirements for a small LAN network
-
Hallo everybody! I'm looking for simple solution to run my network. I have about 40 to 50 users and we are sharing the same connection, which is restricted to 48 Mbps from my ISP. I read some installation instructions on the main page, and I'm a bit confused. According to this here:
First step, install a Video card, Keyboard, a CD-ROM drive, an IDE hard Disk drive, 128MB of ram or more and at least three Network interfaces in your target machine…
Why do i need 3 NIC's ? I'm using now linux machine with 2 - so? Is it absolutely necessary to have at least three?
And one more question - Do i need to upgrade my server's BIOS in order to use pfSense ? Because here is written :In order to boot NanoBSD-based pfSense 1.2.3 images, a PC Engines ALIX needs to have at least BIOS version 0.99h and be set for CHS mode.
Thanks for your attention in advice ;)
P.S.: I tried with "search", but I didn't find anything related with my questions. -
You only need 2 nic's, the doc you refer to talks about a dual wan setup later on.
Only If you use a alix board then the bios must be 0.99h or newer.

Thank you for the fast answer! Now it's more clearly to me ;)
P.S.: I also wanted to know it's this OS easier to run and maintain in comparison with - Slackware for example (Slackware in console mode without graphical interface ) ??? Are there many advantages in pfSense usage?

Configuration is almost web gui only. As pfSense is a strip down version of FreeBSD it limits the need for upgrades. Security issue will be posted on http://blog.pfsense.org/
