Add a MAC address to the Firewall
-
Hi,
I am a newbie using pfsense. i want to add the mac address of my network backup server.
Can anyone tell me which direction to look to. I tried finding answers but no luck.
Also, i want to assign a static IP for that device so that i can access it through web.
I tried adding through the DHCP server service but of no luck.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you. -
I guess there is no way to do that.
One trick i tried:
Enabling DHCP on LAN interface and assigning an IP for the mac address outside subnet range.
But that did not work though >:(Any clue will help. ???

Did you disable all other DHCP servers on your LAN?
Did you reconfigure your backup server to use DHCP?
Did you do something (e.g. reboot) to the backup server to get it to issue a DHCP request?
Did you look in the pfSense DHCP log to see if it saw a request from your backup server?
Enabling DHCP on LAN interface and assigning an IP for the mac address outside subnet range.
I presume by "subnet range" you mean the range of IP addresses DHCP can assign on the LAN interface rather than the range of IP addresses available on the LAN subnet.
It would help if you gave more detail of "did not work". Your backup server didn't get an IP address? It didn't get the IP address you configured? You couldn't access the Internet? …

Sorry for providing less details on my problem.
Yes, i meant range of IP addresses DHCP can assign on the LAN interface.
My backup is not a server, it is a network backup hard drive NAS220 ( from seagate). It has to be connected to the same router in the network to be accessed by any computer on the network.
Actually, it should be automatically detected if there isn't any firewall. It specified its MAC address, but there is no way i can put a MAC address and assign a static IP for that drive to be accessed from my computer which is on the same network.
It didnot get the IP address i configured it for.
I restarted it after assigning IP but it didnot help. Also, one more thing here is, the router is connected to a switch where i have this network backup drive connected to. Does the router too has to allow the device to get recognized?
Thanks for your help.

I checked Enable DHCP Server on LAN interfaces box
and when i checked the Status: DHCP Leases page, it showed my IP as Offline.I don't know if that network drive sends out a DHCP request. I believe if the network server is detected automatcally when i start the setup on my computer, it should have been sending DHCP requests to get a dynamic IP by itself. ??

but there is no way i can put a MAC address and assign a static IP for that drive to be accessed from my computer which is on the same network.
My home network has four computers wired to a switch which is wired to the LAN port of my pfSense box. Each of the four gets an IP address from DHCP running on pfSense and the IP address is keyed off their MAC address.
I don't know if that network drive sends out a DHCP request.
Its probably overdue that you found out if the drive is supposed to get IP configuration from DHCP (or can be configured to do so). If the drive doesn't send a DHCP request then I don't know how pfSense will give it an IP address based on its MAC address.
If the drive is supposed to send a DHCP request then you should be able to see the DHCP request logged in the DHCP log on pfSense (unless you are running a fairly recent snapshot build of 2.0 BETA) or in a packet trace.
