When I go to System –> Packages I receive the message: Unable to communicate to pfSense.com. Please check DNS, default gateway, etc.  Now I legitimately had an issue with my pfsense box not being able to ping the outside so I modified the rules in the Cisco router (which sits in front of the pfsense box) and can now ping the outside world testing it on domains such as google, reddit, digg, etc. Unfortunately when I go back to the Packages page I am still receiving the aforementioned error!

From Diagnostics --> Ping I am able to ping (from both LAN and WAN) pretty much any domain that I input but when I try to ping pfsense.org/com I don't get any return results (3 packets transmitted, 0 received 100% loss) so I can only assume that you are blocking ICMP traffic. Even though it is unlikely is there a specific port I need to allow through the router to communicate with the package repo?

    Thanks!
