Based on an old post (http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,61.0.html), pfSense can work even on a pc that has a single NIC (say a laptop).

      However, that post also says:

So, techincally, if you don't have a WIFI card, you can run everything off one NIC, if you have a managed switch.

Can I still have a pfSense on a single NIC if I just have a normal, unmanaged switch?

What would you need this for?
If you would need this just for a VPN server it should work.
(assign a dummy VLAN which you don't use for the LAN.)

However if you want to use it as a firewall, then you will need a 802.1Q VLAN capable switch.

          Thanks GruensFroeschli :)

Question though (as I have 0 knowledge about switch stuff): would perhaps a switch that is 802.1p VLAN capable work too?

            No.
            802.1p is part of 802.1q.
It is the part which does the prioritizing.
However you need the part which does the logical separation on the wire.
