Differences between embedded and nano

NanoBSD includes some package support, embedded has no package support.

Configuration is only stored in one place. The two slices are mainly for in case of a bad upgrade.

Yes, I was assuming I could switch to the second slice if I screwed my configuration.

Back it up - it takes only a couple of clicks.

Backing up the config is certainly very easy in pfsense. However it doesn't help if you've screwed the config so that it won't boot as I did the other day. I was playing with the ACPI setup and, after enabling some stuff, it failed to boot. So I switched to the other slice which also failed to boot.
Obviously this was not a production box so it didn't matter but reflashing the 4GB card takes ages!
Am I missing something?Steve

You mean other than not screwing the config ;)
If the system is critical it is always good to have a spare. That may be as simple as a spare 4GB card that you've got a fresh install on, ready for you to swap and apply the current config. I try to keep a minimal system to hand (often just something that DD-WRT will run on) for when things to wrong - been beneficial more than once.

do we need to use industrial compact flash for embedded?
or can we use normal compact flash for embedded and industrial for a full install?also, anybody had a cf failure yet by doing a full install on a normal cf card?

It may be crude but my main learning method is playing until it breaks and then not doing it again! :P
Useful advice regarding a DD-WRT box. I prefer OpenWRT given the choice.

I seem to remember someone quoting 2 years here on the forum for a standard install. With wear leveling though might it not depend on how many spare blocks are available? E.g. if you use an 8GB card but only the 1GB imge does that give more room for error? See: Wear Leveling.

Several older copies of the config are kept in /conf/backup/
So if you get dropped to a shell prompt because something didn't work at boot, you could always pull one of the 25-30 or so backup configs from there.
