      Hello.

Is it possible to register hosts with static IP in pfSense? I'm looking into registering some servers with static addresses on pfSense DNS.

I'm not talking about "Register DHCP static mappings in DNS forwarder" checkbox under DNS Forwarder. That by the way works for me, if address is being assigned by pfSense DHCP server.

Yes. I provided a description of what to do if you are using the pfSense DNS forwarder  in http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,31327.0.html

I'm familiar with the option to define hostnames by hand, but that is redundant operation and adds managament.

Redirect queries for domain lan.example.com to some other DNS server may work, when we install DNS server other than pfsense? But i guess for now only option is to use DNS override table?

          Thank you for your reply.

Its not clear to me what you are looking for. In particular can you describe a solution without redundant operations and which doesn't add management?

For machines with static IPs, there is no way to automatically determine their hostname. It has to be hardcoded somewhere or some other automated process setup (a dyndns client on each machine, perhaps, that talks to a local Dynamic DNS service?)

You could at least use the entries from "DHCP leases" or "ARP table" to generate static entries.
Reduces the manual work a bit but doesn't automate it completely.

Well, this answers my question. Thank you.
