G'day , new to pfsense ,
having issue which seems to p@$ me off .. LOL
are all the images –> http://www.pfsense.org/mirror.php?section=downloads --> corrupted or what..
I have tried downloading from all different mirror to just get a embedded img to work on usb stick with physdiskwrite , i tried 512MB to 4G and none of img seem to boot at all , but just sit there and blink..
could any 1 confirm img not corrupted , and what am i doing right/wrong???

OK I just tried using Win32DiskImager , and on Ubuntu 10.10 , it still doesn't work , i think img 's are corrupted and need to be redone..
currently running Pfsense on hdd with following hardware.
Asus P5GC-MX/1333
E2140 CPU
4GB RAM
250Gb SATA
attansatic inbuilt network card
realtic 8169 chipset network card -
Are you extracting the image from the gzip archive first? No one else is reporting any issues with image corruption and I've certainly had no issues with any of the embedded images.

Yes use Winrar extract from gzip and then use either physwrite or imagewriter (windows or Ubuntu) to img to USB. and then try on pc to boot nothing happens … 1GB Flash was Formatted with FAT before i img to stick
ie 1G flash img seems to partion usb with 2450mb partions and 150mb partion ...
can u tell me how u do it either windows or linux???
coz i keep getting same results..

First off you can use an md5 calculator to check that the images have downloaded correctly. E.g. WinMD5.
However aren't those images are meant for booting CF card in IDE mode? The image expects to be on ada*.
Jim put up a special USB image here: http://cvs.pfsense.org/~jimp/pfSense-1.2.3-usbinstall.img.gz.Lastly be aware that the nanobsd images direct ALL their output to the serial cconsole so if you're looking at a directly connected monitor you won't see anything but blinking! :P

hmm why do thy only put nanobsd img when pfsense meant for X86 pc system that uses video subsystem….where are the images for these..
can u use live CD iso to install to usb and able use install packages..

Ah! Of course I should have realised. That image is for installing to HD if you only have USB so can't use CD.
I guess the NanoBSD images are for embedded hardware which usually doesn't have video. Can you not use the serial console?
There will be an error as it expects to find the file system on the primary master ide and obviously it isn't. However it should give you the option to enter the correct location and boot where upon you can edit /etc/fstab to the prevent the error in future.Steve

Personally I like the HastTab program. It installs a shell extension so all you have to do is rightclick on the file for MD5, CRC32, and SHA-1 Hashes.

excuse me for being noob, but isn't serial outdated feature like back in old days using Analog modems, how would one connect to serial console with what hardware??
nope it just blinks " - " and does nothing else and then freezes system..
how would one edit fstab file when it doesn't even boot..

Many embedded devices don't need, or have, the overhead and cost of a VGA port along with PS/2 or USB for keyboard access. A simple serial port works just fine for such devices.
You'd use a null-modem cable to connect it to a serial port on another computer (whether one that's built in or by using a USB-Serial adapter). You'd then use your chosen serial terminal program. If you installed the NanoBSD image then what you're describing is what I'd expect if you'd hooked up a monitor and keyboard.

Haha! :D. Yeah it is a bit Old Skool! It's big and slow but it's everywhere and everything can talk to it so it's often used on rack mounted hardware.
The error I talked about will be on the serial console. Once you have a null modem cable you should be able to sort everything else. I use PuTTY from windows for serial.

OH ok maybe i just wait untill pfsense 2.0 actually comes out, can't wait as it will support my wireless card " TL-WN781N " and can try get it running as access point for my family as my current belkin wireless router seems to intermittent play up.
would this work with following setup
adsl2+ modem –--> Pfsense ---> lan

AP(wpa2)this setup seems to work with IPFIRE 2.9 core 44, and it dected my wireless card.. other than no info how set this as AP with wpa2.. besides I like layout and look of pfsesne so i will be sticking with it..

That should work fine. I run something similar at home using a Draytek 120 modem and an Atheros mini-pci card.
If you've been using IPFire you'll already be aware of most things to look out for. Like the fact that, unless you put in a firewall rule, your wireless network will be completely isolated from your lan.Steve
