      It sounds like you're volunteering to set up a mirror.  And, the East Coast rules (except for maybe NYC and Jersey)  ;)

      @mromero:

      Jimp - mirrors ARE NEEDED.

      Some folks only have certain time or days when they can upgrade or reinstall and if no official backup mirror is available what to they do? Wait and waste precious time - in this case days - they may have set aside for their pet project?

      The world does not live on East Coast time or your day of the week  ::)

      @jimp:

      No mirrors needed. Nothing has crashed.

      It's offline for a bit while we work on some things.

      Just be patient. :-)

        And at the moment I'm telling you there is a reason they are unavailable… :-)

        It's not going to kill people to keep running the version they have for a little bit longer while we work on things for a bit. They're just snapshots, not actual releases. :)

        There haven't been any major binary changes in the last week, so you can gitsync and get the latest code for now, and just hang tight for a while.

          Actually yes. I am not getting lured into any East Cost versus West Coast slugfest  ;D

          More like a mirror(s) accessible OUTSIDE the Americas on faster, more stable servers - you know like for any major downtime like we are experiencing now.

            They're just snapshots. There is no need to mirror them. The official releases are mirrored, that's good enough.

            Snapshots are temporary by nature, and used primarily for testing. I wouldn't call snapshots being missing for a day or two as "major downtime" for what are unofficial temporary testing releases. Especially when they are down for a reason.

            There is no reason to jump all over every new snapshot release like a rabid animal. Unless you're having a problem are are trying to test if the new snapshot fixes it, there isn't really a compelling reason to follow them daily. I update my home router every couple weeks unless I have a reason to do it more often.

            So chill out, enjoy your weekend, and things will be back to normal before you know it. :)

              In the tradition of naming releases, I move that Pfsense RC1 (version II) be named either:

              1. Rabid Animal (sounds like a rookie UFC fighter name).

              2. Chill Out (sounds like folks who suffer in the frost dreaming of a tropical paradise).

              :D

                Or combine the two… Rabid Chill 1 :-)

                  Hi - New poster here, but I've been running the beta snapshots for about 2 months and love it.

                  First, thanks for a great FREE product.  I just wanted to jump in to show my appreciation, and to remind some squeakers in this thread about the old adage: 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth'.

                  That being said, I'm curious as to why torrent is not being used to distribute snapshots.  While I'm not a programmer, I would think this is not very difficult to implement.    Personally, I would be just fine sharing bandwidth with the project via torrent to broadcast releases for the 'cost' of this great distribution.

                  TSOL

                    Torrents would be a bit useless for snapshots. They release often, so by the time they got a good number of seeders they'd be irrelevant. For the release images it's not a bad idea, but for snapshots it's not very efficient.

                        personally; i support the idea of a snapshot server.

                            Thank you to the devs for the best firewall. I have been running 1.2.3 for over a year and love it. Today however I was going to setup a 2.0 test server to play with ipv6 on the network. Looks like it will now have to wait for another day. Thanks again for a great product.

                              Totally agree.

                              Crash the PFSENSE snapshot server for a month - who cares?

                              Avoid dweebs serving as Guinea Pigs working for free to test the various "oops" with amateur Traktor remix attempts.

                              As Jimp said - update your router once a month  :P

                              @Cino:

                              To the pfsense dev team, Thank You for a great firewall. Hey if the snapshot server has to be down for a week…

                                I decided to try and get some feedback in for the bug tracker over the weekend.

                                I picked the "VMware tools kills upgrades" bug, built a new VM went to update it and found that I couldn't.

                                I'm fine with the snapshot server being out for scheduled maint - as this is a free/libre effort, I really can't complain.

                                But I did waste quite a lot of time with this.

                                Cheers
                                Jon

                                PS Given the responses in this thread, should we expect some sort of announcement 8)

                                  This seems to be only issue of not informing of the maintenance of the snapshot server. Nothing else nothing less.  ;D

                                    Slightly off topic.

                                    Contender for the PFSENSE 2.0 RC1 (version II) Theme Song Rabid Animal can be found here for a limited time. It does sound animalistic:

                                            RC1 - RC1 - RC1

                                            2.0 RC1 is now up for mirrors to sync, they'll be syncing within the next few hours (at most, they're on slightly diff schedules). files.pfsense.org is syncing now and will be done within 5-10 minutes of the time of this post. Announcement to come on the blog at some point today.
