Need help with dmz

i have a tplink 8816 modem router.

this is my configuration:

tplink.ip=192.168.201.1
tplink.dmz=192.168.201.254
(i dont actually need to enable dhcp right?) tplink.dhcp=192.168.201.100–>192.168.201.199

pfsense.wan.ip=static.192.168.201.254/24

with this, i can ping 192.168.201.1, but i can't ping any external ip.

however, if i set pfsense.wan.ip=dhcp (192.168.201.100)

i can ping outside.

where have I gone wrong?

I plan on setting up dual wan. both lines are on the same isp, and same gateway as well. previously in 1.2.3, i've been using dmz. i have the feeling i still need to use dmz, unless pfsense supports pppoe + same gateway. do suggest
