Pfsense build check
-
I am trying to put together a build that will work with the newest version to replace my current D-Link DIR-655. What do you think of this build and do you have any other suggestions for a cheaper build possibly with the E-350? I am trying to keep this as power efficient and cheap as possible, while still maintaining the high performance.
I will probably try and get one of these boards the cheapest.

I am not sure how much I need for basic router functions. I do have 2x512MB Hynix 533MHz that may work for this.Kingston SSDNow S100 2.5" 8GB

What do you think of this, build? I think it may be way overkill for me at ~$300 and I am considering other options.
The new Asus RT-N66U looks promising as well as these new Mikrotik products.

If you are just looking to do basic routing/firewalling ten this is almost certainly overkill.
You won't need more than 512MB if you're not running any packages.
To reduce the power consumption to a minimum choose an netbook atom, NXXX, as thes support speedstep the desktop atoms don't.
FreeBSD and hence pfSense doesn't support wireless-N at this time, though some N cards will work in G mode. If yo need N use an external access point.
pfSense offers way more functionality than any home router and is way more fun! :)

Wow I didn't know it doesn't support wireless N yet, so thanks. I was hoping to sell the router to offset some of the cost, so it looks like I will pass on pfsense for now. If only the motherboards were more affordable a lot of people could start their own diy router.

802.11-N support is right on the bleeding edge of development. If you read through the FreeBSD mailing lists or forum you'll see some people do have it working. However I'm yet to see anyone here at the pfSense forum successfully running it. You'd have to compile your own drivers and copy them across, it wouldn't be easy! ::)
There are some cheaper dual lan atom boards available.
Just use an old Watchguard Firebox and spend the money you saved on electricity.
