Install pfsense Alix board with 44 pins HDD via USB CDROM
-
Hello,
I'm new to Pfsense.
Since last week i'm reading the Pfsense docs as well as the Pfsense cookbook.I see, there are several appliances for sales with Pfsense pre-installed. I want to buy an appliance with an Alix board with a 44 pins HDD atached and install Pfsense myself. The main reason for this is, if I have to reinstall Pfsense, I can do it myself. (as easy as that).
On google i've read several docs about installing Pfsense on alix board with HDD, via vmware etc.
But I was thinking, can't I install Pfsense on Alix board with HDD via USB-Cdrom?
So the appliance have to boot from cdrom and install Pfsense on the 44 pins HDD.Maybe stypid quenstion, but can't find it anywere on the net, nor the docs.
Kind regards,
Roland

You can't do that because the installation process requires a VGA output which is not available on the Alix.
You will need to install onto the HDD in any other computer then enable the serial console in the WebGUI before transferring the HDD back to the ALIX.

Thanks for the answer.
So if i understand correctly:
1. Attached hdd in bracket to usb laptop
2. Install Pfsense on HDD in bracket.
3. Install HDD (now without bracket of course) into alix cover
4. Boot Pfsense on Alix appliance. This is correct?
Kind regards,

1) Install HDD in laptop or computer using IDE connection.
2) Whilst in Laptop/ computer, use another PC to enter the webgui and set to output console on first serial port
3) Transfer to Alix.
4) Boot pfSense on Alix and configure via serial terminal.
