      Hi,
I am Linux  rookie, who is using Smoothwall with some additional packages for 3 years.I just bought a Neoware VIA C3 box. The  old  Intel P3 is making very loud  noise,so I wanted something quiter.

I was thinking of using Sandesk Cruizer  4gb  USB stick as harddisk to install the firewall.
In smoothwall I can install full version on CF card with a perl script that will place the var/log in RAM but there is no USB install.

      http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=25012&hilit=cf+card+perl

      So few questions

Can I have a long lasting (2 to 3 years) full blown (not embedded) Usb intall with like URLfilter(ad blocker),Snort of Pfsense?

Is there any script which wirte everything on RAM ?I have 512mb of memory.

Like Smoothwall is there any manual and list of packages which I can browse?
      Smoothwall mod List.
      http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=23845

How does it compare with firewalls like Untangle and Endian(UTM firewall)?

I apologise for any mistakes and very obvious questions.I browse your forum and only thing I can gether is embedded or nanoversion is for Usb which has restriction on packages  and with even nano version USB can wear out pretty quickly.

I could not find spelling check,so there might be some spelling mistakes.

Using NanoBSD install or embedded the wear level for flash drives is very low.
A lot of packages can be used with Nano.
My recommendation would be to try a nano image first and see how it goes.
There's a lot of useful documentation in the wiki, here's the packages section:
        http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Category:Packages

There some people running a full install from flash who haven't had any problems. I think it probably depends which packages you have installed as to how many disk writes the flash is put through. I don't recommend it.
All logging in pfSense is to RAM anyway.

In case you didn't realise pfSense in not based on Linux but FreeBSD.

Yes I know Bsd  and Linux are different both come from Unix.BSD can run linux binaries but linux cannot.

          Mac came from BSD.

Why do not Linux,Bsd join forces?

Ah! That's a good question and one that's been asked many times.  ;D

It's not going to happen.  ;)

              http://www.hacom.net/catalog/pub/pfsense

or should I download it from pfsense website

              pfSense-1.2.3-RELEASE-4g-nanobsd.img.gz

Also  is there any good tutorial to install it or I just google how to write image on usb and boot it

Kindly can someone direct me to a list of packages which I can install on Nanobsd, especially adblocker.Urlfilter with blacklist updates.

Hacom have a modified image that they distribute for their own hardware but anyone can use it. It has several differences to the main pfSense image, primarily it uses keyboard/vga for it's main console output. The pfSense nanoBSD images use the serial port for the main console.

Use the pfSense images unless you can't use the serial console for some reason.

When you've installed the image the package manager will only display packages that can be installed.
