It is not broken in general - something is broken with it on your system.

If the auto update is unable to check for updates, there is something wrong with your routing and/or DNS.

Actually, I did a restart and it did the auto update however when the download was complete it started to do an extract and reported it "cannot continue file is corrupted"

        Ideas.

Point of note we've NOT changed our setup in 3 months and it's updated fine until late may

Random stops, corrupt files, it sounds like a hardware issue. Flaky HDD or RAM.

It's an alix all in one box, designed for pfsense and comes with it pre-installed

Are you running a NanoBSD install there or a full install?

              Your CF could by dying.

If you have a spare CF, writing out a fresh image onto a new CF and restoring your config would be a good way to eliminate the CF as a problem.

CF cards have limited write cycles, so any kind of activity (especially upgrades) will shorten their potential lifespan. CF cards are cheap, probably $10-15 for a 4GB card, if that.

Depends on your model, but โ€ฆ maybe. I haven't tried to do it, but others have. Some ALIX models do have a laptop hdd connector inside (IDE, not SATA) but you would also need a small laptop IDE cable. CF is cheap, and usually reliable, not a lot of reasons to bother adding (prone to fail) moving parts to it.

I think it's a storage issue, I've just noticed n the dashboard that disk usage is at 103% :-/
