Captive portal while in transparent mode
-
Can pfSense now be used as a captive portal while in transparent mode? I was reading an old post from around 2008 stating that pfSense cannot be configured in such a way.

If transparent mode is a bridge or http proxy with transparent mode, the answer is yes.
If it is something else please state to get the answer. -
My use of transparent mode is to achieve the following:
Server1 - 192.168.3.5 | |Cisco Firewall | |VPN (Internet) | |Cisco Firewall | pfSense WAN - 192.168.3.1 pfSense LAN - 192.168.1.1 | | Server2 - 192.168.1.5
Until we put pfSense in place, Server1 was always able to access Server2 due to the VPN. Now, since pfSense is in place, Server1 has no knowledge of Server2. I would like pfSense to disappear on the network and allow us to go back to the "old days." But I still would like to use the Captive portal.
Is this possible? and am I defining transparent mode properly? I am attempting to follow these rules: http://pfsense.trendchiller.com/transparent_firewall.pdf

You would want server2 on an allowed ip in the CP settings.

Ermal,
Thank you for your suggestion. Would we implement what you mentioned after configuring the server as a transparent bridge?
-
It is unrelated to your pfSense installation being a transparent bridge or not.

No! Captive Portal does not work in transparent mode (layer2 bridge), you have to setup pfsense as a gateway & use pfsense DNS forwarding for Captive Portal to work.
