Remote desktop connection set up

How are you trying to access the remote desktop? How is the network setup?

the network is set up as 192.168.1.1 the server which im trying to connect to is located at 192.168.1.120. im trying to remote onto it from a computer thats using the ip of 192.168.1.100

So they're not on a different interface, and all on the LAN. If that's the case, then it as less to do with pfsense and more to do with firewall rules on the computers.

I'll second LostInIgnorance's post - your problem will be with the RDP server. Either it isn't running or it is firewalled off.

before pf was installed the rdp connection had been working flawlessly for years. do i have to configure a route in pf? or change the rule on router to forward to the pf box?

yea i can ping it from inside the lan.

If you haven't forwarded the RDP port (3389/TCP from memory) then obviously you won't be able to access it.

If your trying to reach that box from inside the same subnet then it has nothing to do with your gateway device. If you can ping it you already have a route.
Domain or workgroup? If a domain, have they both joined the domain successfully? Address via DHCP or Static?
Check the firewall on the Windows machine your trying to reach.
If your trying to reach it from a machine that is on the other side of your WAN or another interface then you need to forward the port and create a firewall rule in pfSense.
The way you have described it though looks like they are both on the same LAN.

when windows (vista/7?) detect a new network, it pops up the dialog with 'select the network location home/public/work' and silently switches on the firewall. So check the firewall, I'll bet it's been turned on again.
