Is it safe to connect 2 pfsense standalone routers to a single switch (or interconnected group of switches)?

I'm trying to set-up a backup pfsense router. My main problem is that my new installations of 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 can't find the WAN's IP address. The modem works fine though. The modem has a static IP and is PPPoE.

You shouldn't be using 1.2.2, its VERY old.  2.0 is practically released, the RCs are extremely stable.
