    I currently have an Athlon 3800+ that's giving me a bunch of issues.  I'm looking at replacing it with a D525.  Anybody know how that is performance wise?  It should be an improvement, but I'm not positive.

    Also, I can get Inwin or Foxconn cases.  Trying to decide which one to get, though.  Any suggestions?  Doesn't have to be super small, just easy to put together and fairly cheap.

    TIA.

      @Bai:

      An improvement in what respect?
      It's not going to be any faster but will be quieter and use less power.

      See Databeestje's testing on a D510 board here.

      Edit: Hmm, it does seem to score higher in a bechmark test.

        Guess it depends on whether your bunch of unspecified issues are to do with "inadequate" CPU performance or other "performance" issues (e.g. doesn't stay up more than 24 hours, doesn't restart correctly after a panic, WAN link doesn't come up correctly after a link down, CPU slows down cause it overheats, power supply is misbehaving, your pushing traffic through the pfSense that you don't need to push through it, etc )

        If your problem is that your existing CPU is operating correctly and you are trying to push "too much" traffic through the box then it is unlikely that changing to an Atom based motherboard will fix the problem.

        Can you provide more details about your issues?

          The box keeps locking up and then upon reboot having issues finding the hard drive.  I think there's something wrong with the drive controller.  So I'm just going to replace it and not deal with the hassle.

          In other words, nothing to do with pfSense.  Just general hardware malfunctions.  I'm just trying to make sure that I'm not going backwards in performance.

            Have you tried a recent pfSense 2.0 build? It includes more up to date drivers than 1.2.3

            To get needed device support for a new system you may have to use a 2.0 build.

              I'm currently running RC1.  It still needs some tweaking, though, so I figure I'll just start from scratch and try again with the new RC.

                I have best results with these server grade assemblies:
                SuperMicro
                I think they are discontinued but can be easily found on eBay an such sites.

                Together with an SSD this makes a quite yet powerful machine.
