I am about to purchase a new Dell server for use with pfSense 2.0 and am wondering if anyone ran into issues using this server or have recommendations on what to choose in it.

I am not sure what Raid controller to pick; Perc S100 or S300 or the H200
Should I use the built-in broadcom Nic's or switch to Intel?
What is better supported: Intel XEON or I3?

I plan on getting SATA drives - 250GB each in Raid 1 using one of the controllers mentioned above.

      Thanks for any info!

        Hi,

I have two of them (http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,37682.0.html) and they running fine with the latest amd64 snapshots. So I choose the XEON instead of the i3, because they have the aes-ni instruction set (hopefully it is supported in 2.1), but both of them are supported in pfsense. I use the onboard sata controller with two hdds (buy a second hdd on the free market) with gmirror install option, and use the free pcie slot for a quad intel nic.

I will make the adjustment to XEON and Intel Nic's as suggested. For the drive controller would you recommend PERC S100, S300 or the H200? We want to run Raid 1 and I see on Dell's site that they say S100 / S300 are only supported in Windows. I am assuming the H200 is hardware raid… but does pfSense support it?

          Thanks.

As I said, i use the onboard controller (I don't know the name of it) with two HDDs and make a software raid1 with pfsense gmirror install option. So you don't need any special driver or controller for it.

              Hi there,

how did you install pfSense onto the HDDs connected to the H200 controller? My pfSense installation hangs after switching into the install ncurses dialog.

              Regards, Tim
