Serial Console with W7x64?
-
This may be totally dumb/n00b question but I've been keeping an XP box around specificlly to use Hyperterminal.
For some reason I can't for the life of me (been trying litterally for 3-4 months) get PuTTy to work with w7x64 (for anything not just pfsense).
What am I doing wrong and/or is there a good alternative?
Thx.

I use putty at daily basis, but have to admit usually i use it on 32 bit but also i'm using 64 bit, and there is no separation between those, it just workstm
both machines uses 32bit version though -

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
and just downloaded "putty.exe" under the "For Windows on Intel x86"?
What am I doing wrong then? I can't for the life of me get it to connect to anything. I just hit the "Open" button and nothing happens…

You obviously have to select the correct options in putty:
Select serial connection, select com port, select speed. There are some further options if your remote com connection has unusual settings.
Works for me on everything I've used it with.

Do you try to use it with serial or ssh?
if serial have you checked from bios that settings are corrected to pfsense?

yeah i don't know what the heck is going on… I can get it to work (PuTTy) on any XP 32/64 machine or any Server 2k3 machine but not W7... obviously user error :-[
I did learn that hyperterminal works in W7 if you put the .exe and the .dll in the same directory - so I've been using hyperterminal for the time being on W7x64.
Thx for the replies - yes serial is configured properly in the bios, i try to use serial not SSH.

Is it only the serial part of putty that isn't working?

[/quote]Download the installer variant of putty and install it.
I've never got the standalone to work in W7 on serial for me but the installed version works.
Also, if you're using a USB-serial dongle, ensure that the correct COM port is chosen, these tend to switch the COM port number whenever they're connected (I've gone all the way to Com19 before). -
yes only serial part of putty isn't working - very odd but probably my issue.
I'm not using a USB dongle - when I put hdd with XP pro in the same exact machine with same exact cable hyperterminal works fine so its something software related. I figured out a way to use hyper terminal on W7 so i'm all set… Thanks for the help & answers. Interested in trying to get that fixed but not the end of the world if it can't be fixed.
