      Can a pfSense box be set to WoL (wake on lan)?  Or is this another of my daft ideas?

        your pfsense box can be the WoL initiator, or the initiated, yes.

            its hard to answer that with a concretely; but for the most part yes it may extend the life of your hardware… ive had a computer running pfsense here for about 3.5 years now, running 24/7/365 and shes still running like the first day i built it.

              I may well turn it on then (provided the hardware supports it as I guess there is no software side for it in pfSense)

                Most electronics fails either when it overheats or when it gets a surge of power (such as when you start it up). By far the majority of failures I've experienced over the years have been when things have been switched off and then later on again.

                As such, I'd actually suggest that you leave it running 24x365 if you can.
