Remove a static registration
-
I have a freeBSD vLan DHCP server - but I'm changing to pfSense in a couple of days.
I don't want everyone to have to readdress their PCs. I have a network MAC scanner, so I could very quickly find out what addresses are being used by every machine. I could then statically reserve these addresses. Then, a couple of days later, I could remove the static reservations and everything would DHCP happily? Or would that cause problems?
I'm also going to change the pfSense box in a few days - can you backup the current DHCP leases and then restore them?

take backup of your config, edit it manually if needed and upload it back to pfsense. after that bootup and voila
-
But the backup won't backup the issued DHCP leases - or does it?
-
darn you're right..
what in those leases are so specific that those can't change?
-
Might be being overcautious - don't want it to issue an address that's already in use.
-
change firewall during night. or just send anybody that there is 5-10 minutes maintenance break and everybody should restart their computeres
-
Currently the lease time seems to 12 hours. So, if I changed the dhcp server in the evening or over the weekend, so that even if the computers were all still on, their IP addresses had expired - would that be 'safe'?
-
yes that would be safe

Many thanks,
So it's a case of, if I do it on a Sunday morning, it will all work perfectly when people use it on Monday (they won't even know that it's been done).
-
yes if you have tested anything work correctly. and when you boot up your computer, then it's shouting dhcp servers –> dhcp servers answer and toss out new ip-address
-
So it's just a case of me being too much belt & braces then - I should trust the system to work, and it will!
