      Hi there,

I have a core 2 duo 2.3ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD HP DC 7100 Ultra small form factor running as my PF SENSE 2.0 Fresh Install Box.
      Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Current: 249 MHz, Max: 2333 MHz
      110/193000 - State Table
      1708/32768  - MBUF Usage

Onboard NIC and a USB Ethernet (All i can get into that machine really).

Without PFSense/Squid i get 2.1mb download which is line speed for my DSL LINK.

However going through the firewall i get about 500k/sec which is a quarter of the above. The system CPU or ram is not anywhere near loaded up.

I'm a PF sense newbie but I have done some homework  read around about the boot.conf tweaks you can make to speed up squid and the firewall/squid.

I also added the ip address of the steam content server I am downloading from to the SQUID proxy bypass list and from my Lightsquid reports it looks that it's just passing the traffic straight through the firewall so probably a firewall issue. My netgear dg834g can hit 2.1mb/sec and that's a pretty ancient device so I would have expected my dual core pfsense box to let me hit close to that minus any overhead.

I don't know about about debugging PFsense otherwise I would post up log files and system info.

Hoping someone can help and if you need any information to do so please do let me know.

      Cheers and thanks in advance.

Also under System > Advance > Networking

I have the following 3 tick boxes enabled (Based on some searching around Forums)
        Disable hardware checksum offload
        Disable hardware TCP segmentation offload
        Disable hardware large receive offload

If your switch supports vlans, assing a vlan for wan and use only one interface.

Your problem should be your USB network device.

          EDIT:

Take a look at this link for some hints
